iSquint Lets Mac Users Convert Videos for the iPod
Tyler Loch just released iSquint 1.0 for Mac OSX that will easily and quickly convert just about any video file you have to the iPod Video. It will even add it to iTunes if you want. In other news, he also heavily modified Eric Petit’s popular Handbrake application to a version called Handbrake Lite that simplifies conversion of DVDs to the iPod Video. Like most iPod video converters for Mac and Windows, these programs are wrappers for ffmpeg, the Swiss Army Knife of Unix video transcoding.

There is no windows version of Handbrake or iSquint, nor is there likley to be. Not that there can't be, but nobody is working on it to my knowledge. Look at my Windows iPod converting howto for other Windows options.

I did the step by step procedure for converting movies for windows and I have them on my ipod. The movie on the ipod skips and the sound is ten secounds behind its like playing sharades. Why is that? Did I do somehting wrong?

iSquint is another pretty windowing wrapper program for the command line (very versatile) ffmpeg Unix program. It allows you to take just about any video file and convert it to something that will work on an iPod. It's useful for converting everything except for DVDs. (for that, one might use Handbrake)
I am not the author of iSquint and there is currently no Windows version. However, ffmpeg has been made to work under Windows by using cygwin, a Unix -> Windows framework. Therefore it shouldn't be too terribly hard to "port" iSquint to Windows because iSquint is only a front-end. All the hard work is essentially done via ffmpeg. I'm not working on a Windows port though because I don't really have a need for it.

I get the idea that most of the "hip" programmers these days are on Macs and that's why you see all the coolest tools coming out for Mac OS X first. Obviously there is demand for an iSquint for Windows. Most people out there with iPods are not Mac users. With well over 50 million iPods in the world, Windows iPod users must outnumber Mac iPod users by a factor of at least 10 to 1.
I don't care if you like to use Mac or Windows. You should really get pissed off about the fact that there isn't a common platform. I mean why should a program work on one computer and not work on another one? Aren't we past that yet? Actually, come to think of it, Unix programs pretty much work everywhere. Without them, you would never even have a Videora, Handbrake or iSquint to begin with. It's the Unix core of Mac OS X that allows all of these really cool tools to be written. Windows has cygwin as a bridge to Unix, but it's install base isn't anywhere close to Mac OS X's 100% Unix install base.

Well, looks like there is Handbrake for Windows now! Download and enjoy. I haven't tried it yet though.
